Originally i trained as an illustrator creating extremely detailed work which was evident in my earlier works. Shortly after graduating with a BA hons in Illustration I began to study the work of Edward Seago, I instantly resonated with his loose and expressive style of painting.
I worked very hard for many years to undo the need for unnecessary detailed descriptions. I made it my mission to create a similar sense of expression as Seago, while maintaining subtle areas of detail where I wanted to establish a focal point.
I consciously worked faster using larger brushes, avoiding the temptation to fuss with unessecary details or over describing something too early on.
This new approach to painting challenged my way of seeing, all of a sudden I was able to paint without the constraints of an over critical mindset, this sense of expression always makes me feel free.
I start every painting with a bold expressive mark, creating the under painting while concentrating only on the main elements of the composition. This way of working creates a wonderful variation of brush marks that appear abstract in places as I build up the layers adding a magical sense of depth and movement.
Why horses?
Fundamentally it is the complex muscular aesthetic of these powerful animals that inspires me to paint them. They have this wonderful depth of sensitivity in relation to their environment and that subtle way of communicating which never fails to rouse my interest.
I have always had a fascination with horses, as a child I would spend a lot of time studying and sketching them, I have made thousands of quick sketches accompanied by notes, creating a small library of information to recall on when I am painting.
As a child growing up we were very lucky to live close to the gallops so got to observe many fine racehorses exploring the concept of speed.

Commision artworks
If you wish to commission a painting of your horse, all I would require is a selection of photographs and any other information about their character you feel maybe relevant.
If you are unsure as to exactly what you want I can advise on size, colour combinations and overall energy of the painting.
Before I start the finished artwork I create a mock on my computer using the latest version of photoshop, this will help you visualise how I will approach the painting and another opportunity for us to discuss the process and make further amendments if required.
