Thorgrimur is an Icelandic artist, born in Reykjavík in 1980. Whenever possible, he prefers to work from direct observation, believing it to be the optimum way of creating an authentic look. Even though he finds inspiration in a variety of subjects the landscape, his greatest passion, continually finds its way to his canvas.
Working in the Alla Prima style of painting, Thorgrimur expresses his subject in what he likes to describe as painterly realism. Maintaining an emphasis on “accurate” drawing, values and color, he aspires to capture his subject as honestly as possible while articulating its emotional impact.
"Horses are beautiful, powerful but gentle creatures. The Icelandic horse changes its coat with the seasons to cope with the harsh winters. They look like fluffy furballs in the winter and majestic in the summer. I’ve always been in awe of them standing out in the blizzard, turning their backs to the wind seemingly unfazed by the chaos of life. They have always captured my imagination."

I prefer to work from photographs when I work on animal paintings. To me it’s all about timing, lighting and composition to capture that moment of inspiration. I almost exclusively work from my own photographs but if the client has a variety of images of the horse I am happy to have a look at them.
After finalizing details about size, price and framing it takes me 1-2 month to finish the piece which will then be packed and shipped. The client will be informed on the progress and receive updates along the way.
